CityBeat installation opening at 26th of August

The CityBeat public art installation at the Lasipalatsi square opening on the 26th of August makes it possible to touch the heartbeat of a city.

European wide Public Technologies exhibition shows artists Mina Arko and Ben Dromey’s CityBeat installation in Lasipalatsi Square, starting from 26.8. until the end of September 2011. The work invites the public to touch and feel the ‘heartbeat’ of four European cities. CityBeat is produced by Finnish Bioart Society and it is part of European Public Art Centre’ Public Technologies exhibition.

The installation appears as a large cube on the corner of Lasipalatsi Square near Simonkatu. By touching its surface, people can feel and compare the heartbeats of four cities – Helsinki, Riga, London and Lisbon. We are live recording sound in central places in these cities and translating it to a heartbeat. You are able to feel and compare the changing pace of the cities by touching the installation form. We expect the heartbeats to alter during the day depending on the amount of activity in each respective city.

Svamp Helsinki improvisation workshop, Sun 24.7

Svamp Helsinki, July 2011
Sound improvisation workshop
Sun 24.7.2011, 13:00-16:00

@ Chamber music hall,
Sibelius Academy R-building
Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 9
00100 Helsinki

Svamp is a monthly workshop for music improvisation, organized as a collaboration between Ptarmigan and Äänen Lumo. It does not involve money, careers or obligations – only interpersonal and sound relationships. Svamp sessions may range from free collective improvisation to directed exercises or game-playing. You do NOT have to be a professional or trained musician – just someone with an interest in sound, an open mind, and the ability to listen.

The session is open to anyone interested – please bring with you something to make sound with (an acoustic or electronic instrument, voice, objects/devices etc). We’ll meet at Chamber music hall (Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 9) at 1pm on this week’s Sunday. If the front door is locked, I’ll be waiting there from around 12:55 till 13:05. If you suspect you’ll come later than that, send me an email (visa [dot] kuoppala [at] gmail [dot] com). Chamber music hall is on the 2nd floor, stairs lead to it to the left from the lobby with the coat-racks.

Svamp Helsinki, heinäkuu 2011
Ääni-improvisaatioworkshop
Su 24.7.2011, klo 13:00-16:00

@ Kamarimusiikkisali,
Sibelius-Akatemia R-talo
Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 9
00100 Helsinki

Tapaamme Kamarimusiikkisalissa (Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 9) tämän viikon sunnuntaina klo 13. Jos etuovi on lukossa, odottelen sen edustalla n. klo 12:55-13:05. Jos epäilet tulevasi myöhemmin, ota yhteyttä sähköpostitse ((visa [dot] kuoppala [at] gmail [dot] com)). Kamarimusiikkisali on 2. kerroksessa, raput menevät vasemmalle ylös aulasta, jossa on vaatenaulakot.
